Happy Thanksgiving, Lovelies!

Well, the title says it all. I wanted to wish each and every one of you a very happy Thanksgiving. I've always loved this holiday, because I think it is based on something that is morally worth celebrating: being grateful. I saw a pin on Pinterest recently that, while funny, actually was kind of sad... because it's true.

Thanksgiving is rapidly becoming an almost obsolete holiday. We don't get physical gifts on Thanksgiving and it's not about partying like crazy, and therefore, it's lost popularity. What it is about is recognizing how lucky we are to have family and friends, health, money, jobs, pets, homes, etc. Isn't that enough to celebrate? Truthfully, we should probably have Thanksgiving once a month so we quit overlooking our blessings during the rest of the year, but if once a year is all we get, why wouldn't we want to take that day and cherish it for all it's worth?

Thanksgiving never used to be a commercial holiday. Yes, there were traditions to it (girlfriend loves her some turkey and stuffing!), but outside of one's own personal home, not much was mumbled about this fantastic day. Since then, greeting card companies have developed thousands of cards for it... fair enough- why not spread the sentiment of being thankful?? But THEN, the retailers out there, outside of grocery stores, of course, started wanting to make money off of this untapped resource of a holiday. I mean, come on, why not take a holiday that's focused on the immaterial goods in our life and try and make it material, right? Wrong. Black Friday began and became pure mayhem- injuries, deaths, insults... all in the pursuit of getting more STUFF.

Now I'm not saying you shouldn't go out on Black Friday- that's your call. Do as you wish- I don't have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is these stores that are now open at 9:00 or midnight on Thanksgiving/Black Friday, forcing employees to spend their Thanksgiving away from their family, or dreading resting up for their upcoming shift, just hours after they finish their dinner. Making money off of Thanksgiving and using it as a kick-off to Christmas shopping makes me feel pretty lousy about it. I didn't actually realize how much the principle of it all upset me until I sat down to write this.

Great deals can be found... but at what cost?

Anyway, long story short: please try and find something to be thankful this Thanksgiving. Be with your family if you can. Tell someone you love them and, above all, if you go out on Black Friday, please... please, please do NOT trample your fellow man for a laptop. Believe me, it isn't worth it. ;) Happy Thanksgiving, dolls- I, for one, am thankful for all of you and the friendship you've extended to me... I'm one lucky girl.

God bless,
Photobucket

P.S. If you haven't done so yet, PLEASE go to http://oeuvreawards.com/ and vote for Cory Regnier for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. Thank you!!

  1. What a cute picture of your family! I agree that we need to celebrate more all the things in life we have been blessed with. I also agree that Thanksgiving needs to be focused on more, not black friday, and not Christmas quite yet. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family!

  4. Great post! I think Thanksgiving is something we should keep in our thoughts every day, and while I enjoying spending extra time with family and friends, I don't understand why we need a designated holiday to do what we should do all the time. And I agree that Black Friday's great for deals, but that people can get way too carried away about it.
