"A father carries pictures where his money used to be."
~Author Unknown
As you all know, this weekend is Father's Day and I'm pretty excited about it. Father's Day for us usually results in a family get-together of some sort, so I will be sure to fill you in on that after the weekend. :) My Pops is the man. I have always looked up to my dad as a shining example of what a father should be. Today, I wanted to kick it like an old-school book report and do a post on the top 5 reasons why I love my dad.
1) His ability to tolerate my craziness!!
My dad has always maintained a calm demeanor, which is partly because of his personality, but also due to a great deal of patience and understanding. He knew when he had kids that they were not easy. He knew we would make insane amounts of noise and nag him to the extreme. When my brothers and I wanted to go somewhere as children, we would, all four of us, get together and sing songs very loud about the place we wanted to go. This would make me snap, but my dad not only stayed calm and laughed, he'd take us. What a sport!
2) His sense of humor
My dad is THAT dad. The one that is making those goofy jokes all the time that only a dad could laugh at. He has such an odd sense of humor and finds the oldest, most cliche jokes in the world the funniest. But even so, when he says something of his own mind that is unique, he can make me laugh like none other. He has an incredibly quick wit, like my mother, which I inherited from them, so when we all get together and joke, there are always side aches and tears.
3) His support
I have changed my mind about my future a million times: I wanted to be an actress, I wanted to be a newscaster, I wanted to be a cosmetologist, I wanted to be a fashion merchandiser, interior designer, English major... you name it. And every time I have told my parents that I am changing majors and changing schools, he didn't question it for a minute. Not one second. He would just say, "Okay. Good for you! What do you need us to do to help??" He is amazing and never seems to doubt my ability to be an adult and decide where my heart lies for myself. He is amazing.
4) His belief in love
My dad loves my mom to pieces. I could go on and on and on about that, but I wont. Before I met Scott, I hated love and all things love-related. When my brother told me he was engaged, I basically told him he was a fool. In fact, on their wedding day, my dad and I were talking at the reception and my dad asked if I was having a good time. I said, "I don't know. I don't know if I really believe in all this love stuff." And I will NEVER forget what he said to me:
"You are just one look across the room from falling head over heels in love."
Two weeks later, I met Scott and was instantly positive that he was The One. Dads are brilliant.
5) His respectfulness
My dad has been at the same job for as long as I can remember and attained multiple promotions in that time. Why? Because people love him. He treats everybody with kindness and respect. He doesn't judge and he doesn't hold petty grudges. My dad knows that we are all human and make mistakes. That, to me, shows incredible respect. When I have made major life-changing decisions, my dad has respected my choices. My dad always treats my mother with respect and values all who show themselves to be respectable. That has served as an incredible inspiration and shows a quality that I want to apply to my own life. He is a true role model.
So that's my daddy in a nut shell. I love him to pieces. I will never forget him taking me to the circus and then, him walking me down the aisle and being the first one to dance with me as a married woman. I sobbed like a baby on my wedding day. Right before he presented me to Scott, I saw him tear up for the first time in my entire life. He turned to me and said, "Here we go, baby. I love you." UGH! I tear up even now as I try and write this.
My dad is the ideal man, in my eyes and he can never do wrong. I hope you all have someone like this is your life, even if it's just a father-like figure. They are amazing. So here's to you, Pops! Though I doubt he'll get to read this, I feel like he knows just how much I love and value him. I cannot wait to celebrate and show him even more how much he means this weekend. What about you?? Are any of you celebrating this weekend?? Hope you all have a great couple days and I look forward to hearing from you all next week.
God bless!
